With the increase in the number of foreign residents in Japan, there is an urgent need to deal with linguistic minority children who need Japanese language instruction in schools. This book focuses on the development of reading skills, which are said to be essential for academic achievement, and empirically elucidates the actual situation from the dynamism of acquisition and loss of multilingual skills. It then proposes a developmental stage index of reading skills that can serve as a guideline for language education for linguistic minority children in the Japanese school community.
