Ajrakh cloth is said to trace its roots back more than 4000 years. It has been made from Sindh, Pakistan to Kutch, India. Traces of ajrakh cloth can be seen on the famous stone statues of priest-kings excavated in the Indus city of Mohenjo-daro (2500 B.C. to 1800 B.C.). The shawl over the shoulders of the statue was carved with motifs unique to ajrakh.
The designs include radial patterns centering on a star and motifs of nature, such as plants, trees, and waves. Influenced by Islamic art, no people or animals are depicted. The geometric patterns are repeated, and the designs are reminiscent of Islamic architectural ornamentation.
*The patterns are dyed one by one using handmade crystal woodblocks (woodblocks), giving this cloth an elegant and luxurious finish. This is the result of careful and time-consuming handwork, as the woodblocks are changed every time the color changes.
