In translating the views of more than 60 famous people from overseas on Japan, I felt as if I had embarked on a journey of knowledge for each of them. I couldn't help but wonder what they would have to say next.
I am glad to hear positive opinions, but I also need to listen to the harsh ones. The thing that stuck with me the most was why Japan went to war. I can't help but wish that the Japanese warlords had taken Gandhi's letter seriously. I was also struck by President Clinton's sincere letter to Japanese Americans interned in concentration camps during World War II.
Since the English and Japanese are side by side in a bilingual format, I have tried to follow the order of the original text as much as possible so that the reader can compare and see how each English sentence has been translated. Therefore, some of the expressions may be a little stiff.
As the author states in his preface, this book has been an eye-opening experience for me as well. I hope readers will share this experience with me.
I envy Japanese people who draw extremely neat and clear pictures. The paintings are never boring and never look as if they were hastily finished. Their work is as natural as breathing, and they paint the figures with a few strokes, as easily as buttoning up a vest. Oh, how I wish I could paint people with a few strokes!
