In Nepal, there is a set of five traditional musical instruments called [Panche baja]. The dholak (drum), jali (cymbal), nashenga (large curved wind instrument), and the shanai is one of the instruments in this set.
These instruments are indispensable for sacred ceremonies, especially weddings, and can be said to be part of the spiritual landscape of the Nepalese people.
The shanai is a reed instrument similar to the Indian shahnai. It has a nostalgic and melancholy tone.
