Sesshu
By Sesshu*, Muromachi period, Lent by Hofu Mouri Hokokai
[This is a masterpiece by Sesshu, a Zen monk* and painter whose work has been introduced in textbooks as "The Little Monk Tied to a Pillar and Drawing a Rat with His Toes. [Known as "Sansui nagamaki" (Landscape Scroll), it is a long picture scroll measuring approximately 16 meters in length and is said to be a masterpiece of Japanese ink and wash painting. It is said that Sesshu, who traveled to China under the patronage of the Ouchi clan in Suo (Yamaguchi Prefecture), painted the scroll after returning to Japan and presented it to the Ouchi clan. It is a masterpiece of Sesshu's sixty-seventh year, which is full of passion in spite of its harshness.
*What is a collotype?
While offset printing, a common printing method, expresses colors and shading with a density of small dots, collotype expresses them with continuous gradation, which makes it possible to express them with fine details that are closer to the real thing, as in a photograph.
Sesshu
Born in Bicchu (Okayama Prefecture) between 1420 and 1506, Sesshu went to Kyoto at the age of 13 to study ink painting at Shokokuji Temple. He was also skillful in decorative painting of flowers and birds. Since he lived as a free painter, he had few direct disciples and did not form a school. His representative works include "Amanohashidate," "Landscape," and five other national treasures.
