The eco bags are mainly sewn by women who have just graduated from vocational training at Creative Handicrafts, a fair trade organization that supports women in Mumbai, India, where the clothing is produced.
For these women, who live in slums and are trying to become self-reliant by learning sewing skills through NGO encounters, the eco-friendly bags are a great source of income as well as training on the sewing machine [for straight stitching].
These women come here from the countryside, where they only understand the local language, lack education and training opportunities, and don't even know how to get out of poverty, to receive training, gain confidence and friends, and begin to live a life of hope.
The fair trade eco-bags serve as training to improve their sewing skills and lead to important work to support the new steps forward for women who are trying to make a new start in their lives.
