[Kuwana no Tono-san Shigure de Chadazuke]
Kuwana is the 42nd post town on the 53 Stages of the Tokaido Highway. As the eastern gateway to the country of Ise, Kuwana was crowded with people visiting the Ise Shrine, especially those crossing the 7 ri from Owari by boat [Shichiri-no-watashi].
It is said that Basho's great disciple Kagami Shikaku named the area "Shigure-haguri (clam in the rain)" (meaning "clam in the rain" in Japanese). It is also famous for the song "Kuwana no Densama, Shigure de Chachazuke*♪" in the "Kuwana no Densama, Shigure de Chachazuke*" (Kuwana no Densama, Chachazuke in Shigure), a song widely sung at banquets.
