Edo period, Lent by Kyoto National Museum
The Gion Festival, which marks the beginning of summer in Kyoto, has such a long history that it can be said to have originated in the Goryokai of the Heian period (794-1185), when people prayed for the repelling of plague and disease.
The Gion Matsuri Ritual Folding Screen depicts the Yamaboko procession, the highlight of the festival.
The right screen depicts the Mae-matsuri and the left screen depicts the Goto-matsuri, both of which depict the festival in the Edo period.
