Muromachi period, Lent by Shu-an, Daitoku-ji, Tokyo
As the picture scroll unfolds, demons and ghosts appear one after another. They march rapidly from right to left, displaying expressions and movements brimming with individuality. Many of them seem to be instrumental yokai, disguised as everyday items, musical instruments, weapons, and Buddhist ritual implements. This represents what is called "tsukumogami," which is believed to be a kind of "tsukumogami" that often haunts the hearts of people by acquiring spirits as incarnations after a hundred years.
[There are several lines of picture scrolls called "Night Parade of One Hundred Demons," and a large number of manuscripts from the Edo period remain. Among them, this scroll, which has been handed down to Shujuan, the pagoda of Daitokuji Temple, can be said to be the oldest. Although the circumstances of its formation are shrouded in mystery, the rhythmical development of scenes with colorful yokai in this Shujuan book is very attractive. At the end, a huge red orb, said to be either the sun or the flame of a spell to extinguish sins, called Sonshodarani, emerges from the darkness, and the yokai turn back, bringing the procession to an end with a haunting aftertaste.
This is a masterpiece of picture scrolls that allows us to encounter the humorous sensibility of the Japanese people of the Muromachi period.
