Description
[This Hellenistic marble sculpture depicts the winged goddess of victory, Nike, descending from the sky into the bowels of a ship. It was discovered in 1863 on the island of Samothrace (today's Samothrace). The head and arms are missing. It is in the collection of the Louvre Museum in France. It is estimated to have been made around 190 B.C. It is believed that the people of Rhodes erected the statue near the Kabeiros shrine on Samothraki to thank the goddess of victory, Nike (Nike), for their victory over Antiochus III of Syria, but there are various theories as to its origin and date of creation. |
