Starting from the actual communication that takes place in English classes in Japanese high schools, this book traces the meta*communication that develops in the classroom *outside* the classroom and its chain of communication, focusing on the [recursive] characteristics of the language used by teachers and students. [This project will clarify the multilayered nature of the social and cultural practice of learning English in the classroom, the multifunctionality of English in the classroom, and construct a framework for rethinking [learning English in the classroom] as communication in and of itself.
