Chieko Shiraishi's (1968- ) [Island Shadows] is a series of various images taken on islands and coastal areas around Japan. All of these images were created using an old retouching technique known as "zokigake," which was popular among Japanese amateur photographers in the 1920s and 1930s. Each image evokes a faded memory, appearing and disappearing in the image as if tracing the photographer's own memory, standing as a pale silhouette against a hazy backdrop of memories.
Chieko Shiraishi
Born in Yokosuka City, Kanagawa Prefecture, Shiraishi began her career as a photographer in the late 1990s, and has exhibited at Gallery Kaido, Gallery Fuyusyo, and other venues. He is also known for his use of a technique called "zokigake," which became popular among amateur photographers in the 1920s and 1930s.
