From “Ponchi (Punch)” to the starting line of modern manga––the evolution of Japanese manga culture nurtured by satire and humor. Japanese manga magazines, which began as vehicles for political satire, evolved into a form of mass culture following the influence of “Ponchi (Punch)” culture and the pioneering efforts of artists such as Okamoto Ippei. Through numerous illustrations and items from a rare collection, this book traces the lineage of manga magazines, from the era of speech suppression up to modern manga. ■Table of Contents Chapter 1 Manga Magazines of the Meiji Era (1868-1912) Chapter 2 Manga Magazines of the Taishō Era (1912-1926) Chapter 3 Manga Magazines of the early-mid Shōwa Era (from wartime to independence, 1926-1950s) 【Author Profile】 Yumoto Koichi was born in 1950. He continues to collect manga magazines while researching and studying manga from the perspectives of both the history of the medium and its value as a documentary record. His books include “Edo mangabon no sekai” (“The World of Edo Manga Magazines”) published by Nichigai Associates, “Fuushi manga de Nihon kindai-shi ga wakaru hon” (“A Book that Explains Modern Japanese History through Satirical Cartoons”) published by Soshisha. Yumoto is active as a researcher and collector of yokai and his recent publications include “Yokai and a Mythical Menagerie: A Pictorial Treasury from the Yumoto Koichi Collection” from PIE International. |
