Shiko Munakata

Born in Aomori between 1903 and 1975. Moved to Tokyo to study printmaking with the aim of becoming a Van Gogh artist, and at around age 23, began to pursue printmaking. He participated in the folk art movement after winning a prize at the 5th National Painting Competition, and produced woodblock prints with a strong indigenous style inspired by Buddhist scriptures and Japanese mythology, which were highly acclaimed internationally. His representative works include "Yongsaren suru Onnagatachi" and "Nibodhi Shakyamuni Buddha's Ten Great Disciples".
