Description
*Picture Postcard Set [Juubun, Night Parade of One Hundred Demons] (set of 8)* Muromachi period, Lent by Shu-an, Daitoku-ji, Tokyo The ancient people's awe of the darkness of night created the image of "One Hundred Demon Nights," in which ghosts and goblins walk about late at night. In the collection of tales, there are stories of people who actually encountered these ghosts and nighttime ghosts. The "Hyakki Yagyozu" by Shinjuan is a pictorial representation of this image. In this picture scroll, the Hyakki are represented as anthropomorphic versions of weapons, Buddhist ritual implements, musical instruments, furnishings, and household goods, or as merged with beasts. This is because the objects become incarnated as spirits after a hundred years, and are then transformed into the gods and goddesses of the world. This represents what is called "tsukumogami," or "attached mourning gods," who were thought to often taunt people's hearts and minds. We have made postcards of each yokai from "Hyakki Yagyozu," an important cultural property of Shuuan of Daitokuji Temple. |
