*Picture postcard set [Juubun, underpainting of cranes, waka poem scroll], calligraphy by Honami Koetsu, painting by Tawaraya Sotatsu*.

Calligraphy: Hon'ami Koetsu, Paintings: Tawaraya Sotatsu, Momoyama period, Lent by Kyoto National Museum

A miraculous collaboration between Tawaraya Sotatsu, the founder of the Rimpa school, and Hon'ami Koetsu, known as one of the "Three Brushes of Kan'ei" (Important Cultural Property, underpainting of cranes, waka poem scroll) (Kyoto National Museum collection). To commemorate the 400th anniversary of the birth of the Rimpa school, we have created a set of postcards that bring this work closer to you!

The original is 13 meters long, and Sotatsu depicted the long flight of a flock of cranes from their first flight to their return to the shore to rest their wings, on which Koetsu's dynamic calligraphy emphasizes the boldness and fineness of the 36 waka poems, which are known as outstanding Japanese classics.

This time, eight scenes from the work have been carefully selected and made into a set of postcards. The motifs are perfect as a letter to commemorate the 400th anniversary of the Rimpa school.

Calligraphy: Honami Koetsu

Born in Kyoto between 1558 and 1637. In addition to his family's swordsmanship, he produced great works in a wide variety of fields. In particular, he is known as one of the "Three Writings of Kan'ei" in the field of Noh calligraphy. In his later years, he established an art village called Koetsu-mura in Takagamine, where he produced various works of art. His representative works are [a waka scroll with underpainting of cranes (a joint work with Tawaraya Sotatsu)] and [an inkstone box with maki-e lacquer on the bridge of a ship].

Painting: Sotatsu Tawaraya

Date of birth and death unknown. Painter active from Momoyama to the early Edo period, who presided over the painting studio Eya [Tawaraya] in Kyoto. While rooted in the tradition of Yamato-e, his works are characterized by innovative forms, bold compositions, and vivid colors that are not bound by the formality of established schools. The decorative painting style originated by Sotatsu was developed into the Rimpa school by Ogata Korin. His representative works are [National Treasure: The Wind and Thunder Gods], [National Treasure: Lotus Pond with Water Fowl], and [National Treasure: Sekiya Mioji].
