Description
*Picture Postcard Set [Mural on the Golden Hall of Horyuji Temple] (set of 19)* Hakuho period, Horyuji collection Horyuji Kondo Mural - A Treasure of the Hakuho Period Revived on Dry Plate Photographs Taken before the Burnout The Kondo mural paintings, which have been preserved at Horyuji Temple in Ikaruga, Nara for more than 1,000 years, were masterpieces of Asian Buddhist art, but unfortunately were destroyed by fire in 1949. These 19 postcards are reproduced from photographs of the mural paintings taken before the fire. In 1934, the Ministry of Education commissioned Convenience Hall to photograph and burn a full-size section of the building as part of the "Horyuji Showa no Dairi" (The Great Repair of Horyuji Temple) project. Photography began on August 1, 1935, and took 75 days to complete, taking a total of 446 segmented and partial infrared photographs. At the same time, Convenido also dared to take color photographs (since color film was not available at the time, monochrome dry plates were used for color separation by filter operation) based on its own judgment. In addition, because of the risk of discoloration when the prints were burnt, the company also commissioned a full-size reproduction of the collotype version. As a result, this is a valuable record of the wall paintings before they were destroyed by fire. |
