私は子どものころから動物が大好きでした。
きっと多くの子どもがそうであるように
私もいろいろなジャンルの図鑑を見るのが楽しくて、
とくに動物の図鑑をワクワクしながら
眺めていた記憶があります。
じつは私は子どもの頃から実家でイヌを飼っていて、
多くの時間をイヌとともに過ごしてきました。
初めて本格的にネコと関わったのは
大学2年生のときのこと。
保護猫の施設が一時預かりの
ボランティアを募集していて、
そこに申し込んだのがきっかけでした。
やってきたのは小さな仔猫です。
預かる前は
「ネコを飼育するのは何かと大変だろうな」
と思っていたのですが、
「世話が焼ける」
ということはまったくなく、
しかも、預かった仔猫は甘えん坊で、
私はすっかりネコの魅力にハマりました。
結果、その仔猫は、
そのまま私が預かることになり、
今も我が家で元気に暮らしています。
そして、私の進路もネコを中心に診療をする
獣医となりました。
基本的にネコは丈夫な動物です。
ただし、だからといって
「飼い主はネコの健康をまったく気にしなくてよい」
ということはありません。
丈夫といっても、やはりいろいろな病気に
注意が必要なことは広く知られていて、
愛猫に長生きしてもらうには私たち人間と同様に
早期発見、早期治療が大切です。
ネコは自分の体調が優れないことを隠す傾向があり、
調子が悪くてもご飯を元気に食べるケースもあります。
とはいえ、どこかにシグナルが発せられているので、
普段から愛猫をよく観察することが重要ですし、
ネコのことをよく知っていれば早く異常に気づくことができるでしょう。
その意味でも飼い主がネコに関する知識が
豊富であることに越したことはありません。
本書は多くの猫種を掲載していて、
猫種ごとに特徴や歴史、
健康上の気をつけたい点を紹介しています。
私がそうであったようにかわいいネコの写真に
ワクワクしつつ、本書がネコという動物を
