*Colotype postcard [Seasonal taste 5 subjects, fuyu shizuka, Fukakawa kiba] KOBAYASHI Kiyochika*.

Collection of Edo-Tokyo Museum, Tokyo, dated 1884 (Meiji 17)

*What is a collotype?

While offset printing, a common printing method, expresses colors and shading with a density of small dots, collotype expresses them with continuous gradation, allowing for more realistic and precise detail, similar to photographs.

Kiyochika Kobayashi

Born in Tokyo between 1847 and 1915. Worked for the shogunate as a goyemonin at the end of the Edo period. He became a painter through the acquaintance of Kawanabe Akasai* and Shibata Zeshin, and left behind a wide variety of works, including nishikie (brocade pictures) depicting the opening of Japan to civilization, caricatures for newspapers, war paintings, and "kousen-ga" (light line paintings), which became popular by adopting the perspective and shadow techniques of Western-style painting. His representative works include the "Tokyo Meisho Zu" series and "Musashi Hyakkei" (One Hundred Views of Musashi).
