*Colotype postcard [Seasonal taste five subjects, Haru-ura, Spring at Atago Mountain] by Kawase Tomoe*.

Collection of The National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo, 1921

*What is a collotype*?

While offset printing, a common printing method, expresses colors and shading with a density of small dots, collotype expresses them with continuous gradation, allowing for more realistic and precise detail, similar to that of photographs.

Kawase Hasui

Born in Tokyo between 1883 and 1957. Studied Japanese painting under Kaburaki Kiyokata. Under the influence of Ito Shinsui's "Eight Views of Omi," he began making prints and pursued "new prints" while using traditional Ukiyo-e techniques under the guidance of printmaker Watanabe Shozaburo, and produced landscape prints with a rich travel sentiment. His representative works are "Twenty Scenes of Tokyo" and "Twelve Scenes of Tokyo.
