Description
| Also called "Mamdo" furoshiki (wrapping cloth), it is also called "Canton," "Hashima," "Hantou," or "East China. It was imported from the Muromachi period (1333-1573) to the early Edo period (1603-1868), and was especially used for tea ceremonies, where it was highly valued under the name of "Meimono-Sakai" (famous textile). This pattern has been reproduced as a furoshiki (wrapping cloth). Ito Mamichi Ito Kozaemon was a wealthy merchant who was active in Hakata for two generations in the early Edo period. He also opened a store in Nagasaki and formed assets through trade with Ming Dynasty China. [The name "Ito Mamdo" is derived from the name Kozaemon brought back from Ming Dynasty China. |
