Description
[Metatron] He is one of the angels of Judaism. Some branches of Christianity and Islam recognize him as an angel. There is no direct mention of Metatron in the Tanach (Old Testament), the New Testament, or the Qur'an (Koran). There are only a few references to Metatron in the Talmud. The main references to Metatron appear in medieval Jewish mystical thought, such as the Kabbalah, and in biblical pseudepigrapha. He is described as a tall [pillar of flame] the size of the world, with 36 pairs of wings and countless eyes (some say as many as 365,000). There are various traditions about Metatron's character, including [angel of the covenant], [scribe of heaven], [agent of God], [YHWH the Lesser]. (YHWH is the Hebrew word for God), and he is said to have 72 aliases. Some medieval Jewish mystics believed that the angel of heaven with a face [more radiant than the sun] who appears in the book of Exodus is Metatron, and that he is the one who is the God of the heavens. Metatron, who guided them with a pillar of flame from above the heavens. It is generally believed that the "pillar of flame" in Exodus is God himself. In the pseudepigraphic text of the Book of Enoch, there is a description that suggests that Enoch ascended to heaven and became Metatron. He is also said to be a twin brother of the angel Sandalphon, who is also considered to be the prophet Elijah. He is said to be more powerful than the archangel Michael, and some consider him to be identical with God. |
