宝暦4〜寛政11年(1754〜1799)、京都生まれ。円山応挙に絵を学び早くから個性的表現で頭角を現す。師にかわって和歌山の諸寺での事業を行ったのが大きな転機となり、応挙の精緻で構成的な写生に学びながら、奔放で大胆な作風、奇抜な構想をもって多彩な作品を残した。代表柵は『山姥図』『花鳥游魚図巻』。
