* Colored paper [National Treasure, Pine Trees (detail)], By Hasegawa Tohaku * Hasegawa Tohaku, Momoyama period, Tokyo National Museum *What is collotype*? While offset printing, a common printing method, expresses colors and shading with a density of small dots, collotype expresses them with continuous gradation, thus enabling the expression of fine details that are closer to the real thing as in a photograph. Hasegawa Tohaku Born in Nanao, Noto (Ishikawa Prefecture) from 1539 to 1610. Founder of the Hasegawa school. At first, he mainly produced Buddhist paintings, but later went to Kyoto and became devoted to Sesshu. Studied Sung Yuan painting and the Makigyo style, and developed his own style of painting centering on ink and wash paintings. His representative works are [National Treasure: Pine Trees], [Enko (Monkey) with Dead Tree], and [Chishakuin Golden Heki painting]. |
