*Miniature colored paper [Kakitsubata] (part of Four Seasons with Flowers and Birds) by Hoitsu Sakai*. By Sakai Hoitsu, Edo period, dated 1818 (Lent by Tokyo National Museum) By Sakai Hoitsu Born in Edo, the second son of the Sakai family of the Himeji domain (1761-1828). He was proficient in various arts including painting, haikai, and waka. He studied Kano painting, sketch painting, ukiyoe, Tosa school, Maruyama school, and many other styles, but he was deeply devoted to Ogata Korin, who became the founder of the Edo Rimpa school. 酒井抱一(さかい ほういつ)
宝暦11〜文政11年(1761〜1828)、姫路藩主・酒井家の次男として江戸に生まれる。画・俳諧・和歌など諸芸をたしなむ。狩野画を始め写生画・浮世絵・土佐派・円山派などの多くの画風を学ぶが、尾形光琳に深く傾倒し、江戸琳派の祖となる。繊細優美で叙情性豊かな作品を残した。代表作は『重文 夏秋草図屏風』『四季花鳥図巻』。
