Tawaraya Sotatsu

Unknown date of birth and death. Painter active from Momoyama to the early Edo period, who presided over the Tawaraya studio in Kyoto. While rooted in the tradition of Yamato-e, his works are characterized by innovative forms, bold compositions, and vivid colors that are not bound by the formality of established schools. The decorative painting style originated by Sotatsu was developed into the Rimpa school by Ogata Korin. His representative works are [National Treasure: The Wind and Thunder Gods], [National Treasure: Lotus Pond with Water Fowl], and [National Treasure: Sekiya Mioji].
