What comes to mind when you hear the words "high school drama competitions"?
Although not as well known as high school baseball, drama clubs also have national competitions where they put their youth on the line. Every year, out of approximately 2,000 schools in Japan, only 12 schools are selected to participate in the tournament. The odds of winning are as high as 175 times. In order to break through this narrow gate, which is even narrower than the Koshien National High School Drama Tournament, high school drama club members from all over Japan work passionately day in and day out to create their plays.
In this book, we report on five schools that have participated in the national tournament and high schools that have incorporated theater into their classes and are making use of it in education. The book weaves together the thoughts of high school students and teachers who are desperately facing theater through interviews, close interviews, and block competitions. The storyteller is film critic Fuyuji Aida. Also included is an interview with the author of "Alps Stand no Hashikata," which became the talk of the town this summer when it was adapted from a high school play.
