Description
Tokonameyaki was born in Tokoname City, Aichi Prefecture, at the end of the Heian period (794-1192) and has a history of 1,000 years. The city of Tokoname is blessed with high quality clay and trade on a peninsula surrounded by the sea. The tableware is handmade by Kagama* Takahisa Hisada, a leading potter in Tokoname ware. The calm and deep rim complements the dishes. [About the process] Made using the stony clay of Tokoname. The pot is shaped by a craftsman's wheel. The design is characterized by the surface grains and the shading of the glaze pools, which are left rough during the process of filtering the mud to give it a unique flavor. This pottery is made primarily from coarse-grained clay, known as domono. The calm and deep rim is accented with lines carved by hand, one by one, using the scraping-off technique. The glaze of Oribe, which is rare in Tokoname ware, is reflected in this vessel, which expresses the unique texture of Takahisa, who was born in Tokoname to a bonsai pot potter and also studied pottery making in Seto. |
