本が売れない時代がくる。
そう言われてずいぶん経ちました。
私が子どもの頃には近所に
「町の本屋さん」がいくつもありましたが、
最近はほとんど姿を消しています。
書店の数の減少とともに、
読者の数も減っているのでしょうか。
たしかに電車などの乗り物で本を読んでいる人も
ずいぶん少なくなったように感じます。
「本を読むより、スマホで動画を見ている方が楽しい」
「わざわざ苦労して本を読む必要なんてない」、
そんな声も聞こえてきます。
読書はもはやオワコンになってしまったのでしょうか。
私は中学校教員として社会科を教えながら、
子ども達に本を紹介することにしました。
「この本を読みなさい」ではなく、
「こんなに面白い本があるよ」というスタンスで。
『毒書生活』というお便りを発行して
5年目になりましたが、
生徒や保護者の方に
楽しんでいただいています。
偉そうなことを言いましたが、
私自身子どもの頃はほとんど本を読んでいませんでした。
でも、「もっと早く読み始めていればよかった…」
などとは思っていません。
読みたいと思ったときが吉日、
新しいことは何歳から始めてもいいのです。
