麻は古代から紙の主要原料として用いられてきました。
正倉院文書などは楮・雁皮より麻紙のほうが多いそうです。
麻紙は紙質が硬くざらざらしている為、細かい文字などが書きにくく、
繊維の処理が難しい為に、平安以後姿を消しました。
現在、福井の和紙工房として全国的に良く知られる岩野さんが、手漉きの麻紙を製造しています。
このいにしえの麻紙が復活する時、日本画家たちの意見が多く取り入れられました。
そして現在、日本画作成に欠かせない重要な画用和紙として、なくてはならないものになったのです。
繊維が大変丈夫で破れにくく、適度なざらつきが絵具をしっかりと抱きとめます。そしてその質感は独特で印象深いものです。
気温や湿度の影響などで製造が遅れ、大変お待たせする場合もございます。
