| This is a craft of the indigenous [Gond] people of central India. *About Bastar Iron* Bastar is a region in northeastern India [Bastar region] where many tribal minorities live. The tribes living in this region have their own customs and lifestyles, The crafts that make use of the techniques used in their daily lives are known both in India and abroad under the name of "Bastar art". Some tribes live in isolation due to conflicts with the government, and it is difficult for them to earn a stable income. The crafts made by these people are the main source of their livelihood, Currently in India, there are many movements to introduce Bastar art, which is attracting attention as "good old folk art" made in the old-fashioned way. Bastar Iron is a craft of the Gond people, who live mostly in Central India, and is known locally as "Bastar Iron" as a representative craft of the Bastar region, and is sold under this name at Malaika. *Iron crafts made by the Gond people* (Bastar Iron) The Gonds are an indigenous tribe living predominantly in central India, and are a relatively large group among the minority tribes in India. They are divided into several sub-groups, some of which originally served as blacksmiths in their villages, and thus possess advanced metalworking skills, which they have passed down from generation to generation. As a result, the Gonds still make many iron and brass products today. Since refining and processing are done one by one by hand, their products feature a natural texture that cannot be found in machine-made products, and the highly designed motifs depicting their daily life and familiar natural scenes are one of their charms. |

Bastar(バスタル)とは、インド北東部の少数部族が多く住む地域「バスタル地方」のこと。 この地方には住む少数部族は、各部族独自の習慣や生活様式を持ち、 彼らの暮らしの中で用いられてきた技術を生かした工芸品が、「バスタルアート」という名前でインド国内外で知られています。
政府との衝突などによって孤立して生活をする部族がいたり、安定した収入が得ることが難しかったりと多くの問題があり、都市部に比べると彼らの生活は決して楽なものではないと聞きます。 その中で生活の糧となるのが、彼らの作る工芸品であり、 現在インド国内では、昔ながらの製法で作られた「古き良き民芸品」として注目され、「バスタルアート」を紹介する動きが多くあります。
バスタルアイアンは、中央インドに多く住む「ゴンド族」の工芸品ですが、現地ではバスタル地方の代表的工芸品として「バスタルアイアン」の名前で親しまれているため、マライカでもこの名称で販売しています。
◆ゴンド族のつくる鉄工芸品◆(バスタルアイアン)
ゴンド族は、インド中央部に多く住む先住部族で、インドにおける少数部族の中でも比較的大きなグループとなります。
複数のサブグループに分かれますが、そのうちのいくつかのグループは、もともと集落で鍛冶職人の役割を担っていたため、高い金属加工技術を持ち、その技術を代々継承しています。 そのため、ゴンド族は、現在も鉄製品や真鍮製品を多く作っています。
精錬や加工を一つ一つ手作業で行うため、機械加工品にはない自然な風合が特長で、彼らの日常風景や、身近にある自然風景を描いたデザイン性の高いモチーフも魅力の一つです。
