Explore the completed existing castle tower supervised by the Matsuyama City Board of Education and the largest castle town in Shikoku

Matsuyama Castle, built by Kato Yoshiaki and rebuilt by Matsudaira Katsuyoshi, has the last surviving castle tower of the early modern castle fortifications. This book provides a thorough explanation of the castle town*Matsuyama, which was created by the division of land into samurai residences and temple towns, and by the development of a defensive town that took advantage of the slope of the mountain. Making extensive use of old maps, illustrations, and topographical maps, as well as photographs of the site, the author unearths the strata of history and traces the stories and traces hidden in the town. This is the sixth volume in a series exploring the history and culture of a town that has developed around a castle. Includes an interview with haiku poet* Itsuki Natsui at the beginning of the book.

Features of this book
*The final form of early modern castles
The main keep, which was rebuilt at the end of the Edo period (the final period of castle construction), is one of the most valuable surviving castle keepers.
This tour explores the magnificent flat mountain castle built on the summit of Katsuyama Mountain, following the solid stance of the original construction and the ancient style of the Keicho period.
*The clue to a deeper understanding of Matsuyama Castle is the castle town.
The construction of a castle is originally planned to include the castle town.
The castle town developed on the foundation laid by the first lord of the castle, Yoshiaki Kato, and the town layout remains strong even today.
*[Culture of Iyo Matsuyama] is also available.
Matsuyama's unique culture is the result of the tastes of successive feudal lords combined with the unique colors of the local area.
After touring the castle, enjoy the culture that has continued since the Edo period.
*Interview with Itsuki Natsui, a haiku poet* who lives in Matsuyama City.
To learn the true charm behind the castle and castle town, it is best to learn from local experts.
We interviewed Mr. Itsuki Natsui, a haiku poet living in Matsuyama, the "haiku capital" that produced Shiki Masaoka, Kyoshi Takahama, and others, about the highlights of Matsuyama Castle and the castle town.
