| *Came from the village of Ajrakpur. Ajrakh cloth is deep blue and deep red. It is one of the most beautiful cloths in the world, combining wonderful colors that cannot be produced by simple dyeing with Islamic patterns. The people of Ajrakhpur are all Muslims and belong to a tribe called Khatri, who used to live in a place called Damathika until the Gujarat earthquake of 2001, when their village was destroyed and they moved to Ajrakhpur in search of a place with more abundant water. Ajrak cloth can only be made in the unique desert climate. It is a cloth so rooted in the land and climate that people in Jaipur say [they tried to imitate it, but could not]. In the desert, we moved to find a place where there is water. That is how important water is for dyeing. What is symbolic of Ajrak fabrics are geometric patterns influenced by Islamic culture, but there are also chintz patterns such as plants and trees, waves, and other nature motifs. *Ajrakh design is steeped in tradition. Ajrak cloth is said to trace its roots back more than 4,000 years. It has been made from Sindh, Pakistan to Kutch, India. There are traces of ajrakh cloth on the famous stone statues of priest-kings excavated in the Indus city of Mohenjo-daro (2500 B.C. to 1800 B.C.). The shawl over the shoulders of the statue was carved with motifs unique to ajrakh. The designs include radial patterns centering on a star and motifs of nature, such as plants, trees, and waves. Influenced by Islamic art, no people or animals are depicted. The geometric patterns are repeated, and the designs are reminiscent of Islamic architectural ornamentation. *The patterns are dyed one by one using handmade crystal woodblocks (woodblocks), giving this cloth an elegant and luxurious finish. This is the result of careful and time-consuming handwork, as the woodblocks are changed each time the color changes. India is a treasure trove of beautiful fabrics, and this is one of the finest. The cloth has a unique irregularity that only handmade wood block prints can produce, giving it a very atmospheric quality. *Conveniently measured! ■アジュラックプール村からやってきた
アジュラク布は、深みのある青、そして深みのある赤。簡単な染め物では出せない素晴らしい色彩と、イスラムのパターンが合わさった世界でも有数の美しさを持つ布です。
アジュラクプールの人たちは、全員ムスリムで、カトリと言う部族の人たちです。2001年のグジャラート地震までは、ダマティカという所に住んでいましたが、2001年の地震で村が破壊されて、それを契機により水の豊富なところを求め、アジュラクプールに移ってきました。
アジュラック布は砂漠の独特な気候の中でしか作ることのできない布です。ジャイプールの人が「真似して作ろうと思ったのだけど、出来なかった」と言うくらい、この土地と気候に根ざした布です。
砂漠の中で、水がある場所を求めてお引越し。それくらい、染色には水がとても大切なのです。
アジュラックの生地で象徴的なのは、イスラム文化の影響を受けた幾何学的パターンですが、草木などの更紗模様や波など、自然をモチーフにした物などがあります。
■伝統に培われたアジュラックデザイン
そのルーツを4000年以上遡ると言われている、アジュラック布。パキスタン シンド州からインド カッチ地方にかけて作られてきました。
インダス文明の都市、モヘンジョダロ(紀元前2500年〜紀元前1800年)で出土した司祭王の有名な石像にも、アジュラック布が使われていた痕跡が残っています。石像の、肩からかけられているショールに、アジュラック独自のモチーフが彫られていました。
デザインは、星を中心に放射状に広がっていく模様や、草木や波など自然をモチーフにした物などがあります。イスラム美術の影響を受けており、人や動物などは描かれません。幾何学的なパターンが繰り返され、そのデザインはイスラム建築の装飾を彷彿とさせます。
