It is believed that Seishi Bosatsu is an incarnation of the moon, and on the 23rd night of the month, people eat and drink together, chant sutras, and pray to the moon to drive away evil spirits. 勢至菩薩は、足をふみおろすと大地がゆれるほどの威力を持つことから「得大勢菩薩」「大勢至菩薩」といわれます。慈悲の観音菩薩とともに阿弥陀如来の脇侍です。勢至菩薩は、ものごとを正しく見きわめる智恵を持ち、その偉大な智恵で人々を迷いや苦しみから救い、極楽浄土にみちびいてくれるのです。ちなみに、智恵第一といわれた法然の幼名は「勢至丸」でした。観音菩薩の基本形である聖観音に似ていますが、見わけるポイントは宝冠に水瓶がついていることです。水瓶には人々の願いをかなえる功徳水が入っているとされます。 うま年の守り本尊であり、「智恵明瞭」「家内安全」「除災招福」のご利益があるといわれています。また、勢至菩薩は月の化身（姿を変えてあらわれたもの）とされ、二十三夜に飲食をともにし、お経をとなえ、月をおがんで悪霊を追いはらう行事があります。勢至菩薩さま
