Description
The decorative fan measures 273 mm in length and 475 mm when unfolded, making it larger than a regular fan and giving it an attractive sense of presence and power when unfolded. The motif is based on the 36 Views of Mount Fuji by Hokusai Katsushika, who is also popular overseas. Sensu are widely popular as a part of Japanese culture and are popular as gifts and souvenirs due to their beauty and functionality. The separately sold fan stand can be used to unfold and display the fan, making it a great item for interior decoration or display. During the Edo period (1603-1867), bridges and boats were forbidden, and travelers had to cross the river on their shoulders or in baskets, or with a palanquin for heavy luggage.
In the Edo era,Bridges and ferry boats were prohibited, travelers ride piggyback on coolie's shoulders, while some have their palanquins carried across on a ladderlike platform.
In contrast to the sight of the traveler's and coolie's struggles traversing the Oi river which swells like a raging sea, the print depicts cherry blossom in full bloom and the static monochromatic Mount Fuji in the background.
