Description
Toshusai Sharaku (date of birth and death unknown) Ukiyoe artist of the mid-Edo period. He is known as an enigmatic artist who disappeared without a trace after producing a series of yakusha-e (portrayals of actors) and other works in a short period of 10 months. Various studies have been conducted on his origins and career, but the current prevailing theory is that he was Saito Jurobei (1763 - 1820), a Noh actor in the service of the Hachisuka family, lords of the Tokushima Domain in Awa. During a period of about 10 months from May 1794 to January 1795 (Kansei 6 had a leap month of November), he produced more than 145 works. Reference Wikipedia |
