ベトナムの市場で見つけてきた東北大花布です。東北大花布は、鮮やかな色彩と独特の模様が特徴的な布です。古き時代を彷彿とさせるような、レトロで美しいデザイン。牡丹などの花柄や鳳凰、孔雀や小鳥、自然の景色などが描かれています。生地のルーツは中国にあるのですが、ベトナムなど中国の影響を受けた周辺国の人々も愛されています。
ベトナムでもちょくちょく見かけるこの生地。特に最近では、「CONG CA PHE」という北ベトナム・共産主義をコンセプトにしたおしゃれなカフェで、象徴的に東北大花布がクッション等へ用いられています。レトロでシックな店内で、鮮やかで美しい花柄生地は印象的で、ベトナムで同カフェを訪れた方は、記憶に残ってる方も多いかもしれません。
■東北大花布のルーツ
東北大花布の歴史は古く、中華人民共和国建国の初期まで遡ります。国民の服といえば人民服で、グレーや緑などで統一されていた時代です。この頃、関係の深かったソ連では、花織物の過剰生産が起こっていました。生産問題の解決と、綿織物不足を補う為、中国はソ連から花織物を輸入することになります。
しかし、当時のソ連の花織物のデザインは、複雑緻密で彩度が高く、地味な人民服に慣れている国民には受け入れ難い物でした。「愛国穿花布」のスローガンを掲げ、政府は花柄服を着ようと呼びかけも行っていたそうです。
その後、上海の華東紡織管理局が設立され、大衆に好まれる生地の柄を作ることを呼びかけ、当時の中国のトップデザイナーたちが、東北大花布のデザインの原型を作り上げました。中でも「鳳凰牡丹」は有名で、不死鳥であり幸福や繁栄を表す鳳凰と、花王と呼ばれる牡丹の花が描かれています。花鳥画からの伝統を感じる、中国ならではの素敵なデザインですね。
ちなみに名前になっている「東北」は、中国東北部のことを指すのですが、特に東北部で好まれ根付いたことが由来になっているようです。
