尾芭蕉の高弟 各務支考が、「時雨蛤」（しぐれはまぐり）と名付けたと言われています。また、騒ぎ唄（広く宴会でうたう歌）の「桑名の殿様」で「桑名の殿様、時雨で茶茶漬け・・♪」と歌われて有名です。
