Description
Benares is a city in the state of Uttar*Pradesh in central India and is a sacred place for Hinduism and Buddhism. You often see pictures of people bathing in the Ganges River in pictures introducing India, and that is Benares. Benares is the colonial name for the city, which is now called Varanasi. Wood carving in Benares is a traditional folk art with a long history that began around 1600 AD. Skilled craftsmen carve the wood and paint it colorfully. First, the woodcarver cuts the wood, such as Benjamin, to size and smooths the surface. The design is then drafted and carved with a carving knife. All the details, including the fingers, are carved by hand. After the carving is finished, the surface is smoothed again. If two or more parts are needed, the same process is repeated and finally the parts are jointed. The finished product is then painted colorfully by a painter using natural paints made from bracken, and coated with lacquer to give it a glossy finish. *About Ganesha A Hindu god spread mainly in India. The child of Shiva and Parvati, he is a unique god with an elephant head missing one tusk. He is the most popular god in India as the god of fortune who brings wealth, bestows knowledge, and removes all obstacles. His Buddhist name is Joyous Heaven His vehicle is a mouse. |
