She has been working on her own original designs since 2005, and is highly regarded as a cutting-edge textile designer with her unique designs influenced by Western decorative patterns of the 1920s and 1930s with a strong Japonisme influence. His father is John Burningham, a picture book author, and his mother is Helen Oxenbury, a picture book author. Emily says that time spent in her grandmother's garden has influenced her illustrations. She also says that she was influenced by Japanese art, and you can see Japanese motifs and colors in some of her illustrations.
