Terra cotta originally means [ terra (baked / heated) + cotta (earth)] in Italian, and refers to reddish clay, ceramics based on that year, and other ceramics. Compared to ordinary unglazed pots, these pots are attractive for their high strength due to high temperature quenching.

About [cracks] found on ceramics
This item is coated with glaze. Glazes are used on a wide range of ceramics for a variety of purposes, including protecting the ware from stains, making it more resistant to moisture, and increasing the strength of the ware. During firing, the glaze melts at high temperatures to form a glassy coating on the surface of the ceramic ware. The crack-like pattern created by the expansion and contraction of the pot and glaze during the cooling process after removing the fired ware from the kiln is called "kan-in" (penetration). The kannyu is a phenomenon in which the glaze hardens into a crack-like state due to the difference in shrinkage between the base material and the glaze. Basically, the glaze shrinks more greatly, resulting in a penetration on the surface of the glaze. Since it is not caused by impact, there is no problem with strength.

About [peeling*chips] of the material
Small flakes of material or raised bits of material may be seen on the surface or edge of the dish, which is due to a phenomenon called "ishihaze. Glaze is made by melting feldspar and other earth and stones with water, and ishibaku refers to stone particles in the glaze that are exposed or chipped off the surface during firing. Since this is an unavoidable phenomenon in the manufacturing process using natural materials, it is not regarded as a defect by those who enjoy Shigaraki ware and other ceramics, but is preferred as a scenery when appreciating and touching the ware. There are individual differences depending on the product, but this also does not affect the strength of the product.
