Born in Edo between 1797 and 1861, Utagawa Kuniyoshi made his debut in the art world at the age of 14, and was active in a wide range of fields, including landscapes, paintings of beautiful women, paintings of actors, paintings of flowers and birds, and paintings of warriors. He was a man of frankness and open-mindedness, and left behind many anecdotes. He was also active as a caricaturist.
