Scroll A is the first of the four scrolls. Scroll A is the most popular among the four scrolls, as it depicts anthropomorphic animals in a spontaneous manner. The author of the scroll is said to be the Toba priest Kakuyu (1053-1140), but there is no proof, and various theories exist. Recent research has revealed that the order of the paintings has been changed since the original.
