Suzuki Kiichi, Edo period, Lent by The Metropolitan Museum of Art The large screen depicts undulating green ivy and leaves of morning glories and blue flowers that seem to float in the air as if they were emitting light through the skillful use of gofun (powdered gold dust). The fresh morning glories add color to the summer setting. Suzuki Kiichi Born in Edo (present-day Tokyo) between 1796 and 1858. He became an apprentice of Hoitsu at an early age. After Hoitsu's death, he departed from his master's painting style, and moved toward bold, innovative, and witty decorative painting. His representative work is "Summer and Autumn Streams. |
