2016年頃からインドネシアのスラウェシ島で採掘されはじめた、葡萄の様な形をした新種の天然石です。
グレープアゲートがぶどうの房のような形状を持つ主な要因は、結晶成長と化学組成の変化に起因します。火山灰の泥の中で育つといわれており、海底に積もった溶岩の隙間で冷却される際、微小な空間に結晶が成長し、外部環境の影響や色素の不均等な分布が、球状の粒が集まったような姿を形成するといわれています。
