| Written by Satomi Nakata The word "是" is one of the words that Chinese learners learn in the early stages of their language study. "我是日本人. (I am Japanese.) (I am Japanese.) But this is by no means the only usage of "是". As learners progress, they will encounter various uses of "是" that are very different from those they first learned. However, the "是" has a variety of properties that cannot be fully explained in textbooks, and it is not uncommon for learners to be stumped by "是". This book systematically examines "是" and forms composed of "是", which are frequently used in modern Chinese, from the viewpoint of modality, and clarifies the essence of "是". This paper attempts to clarify the essence of "是". After reviewing studies related to modality and defining modality, several grammatical forms formed by "是" were taken up and analyzed. In the field of Chinese linguistics, there have been quite a few studies on "是" and its constituent linguistic forms, but there have been no systematic studies from the viewpoint of modality. Inheriting the tradition of Chinese studies in Japan, this groundbreaking book discusses the characteristics of "是", which have not been clarified in studies from the syntactic aspect, by referring to the framework of Japanese modality and incorporating it into Chinese studies. |
