| Stupas - Buddhist StupasStupas were originally built to house the relics of the Buddha when he passed away. Later, as Buddhism spread to other parts of Japan, stupas were built in areas where Buddhism flourished and became objects of worship. This spread to Japan, where three-story pagodas and five-story pagodas are examples of such structures.
