■山岳民族のモン族
モン族とは中国南部やベトナム、タイなど東南アジアに住む民族の一つ。古くから東南アジアに居住していて、ハリプンチャイ王国を建て、後にビルマのペグーに移り住んだのでペグー人とも言うのだそう。その後一部が中国の雲南から南下してきたタイ族やビルマ人などと混血した。現在800万人程度がモン族を自称していのだとか。
モン族は手書きの藍染めの生地に細かい刺繍を施した民族衣装で着飾っています。モン族の刺繍は目が細かくカラフルな事で知られていますが、その理由は、刺繍が細かければ細かいほど、悪霊や災いが身体に入って来ないとされるからなのだそう。細かい刺繍のモン族の布は、それ自体が幸運を願って作られたラッキーアイテムと考えることができますね。
