A maiko is a girl who is a minor (about 15 to 20 years old) before becoming a geiko. After about five years of training as a maiko, including dancing, playing the shamisen, musical accompaniment, and entertaining guests in the tatami room, the maiko undergoes a ceremony called a "collar change" to become a geiko. |
