アレキサンドライトは、産出量の少ない希少石です。
その中でも特殊なキャッツアイ効果がみられるものは特に希少で最高級品だと言われています。
最高品質といわれる世界的に有名な産地はブラジル・ミナスジェライス州です。
「昼のエメラルド」「夜のルビー」とも言われており、昼と夜の光によってその表情を変えます。
この鮮やかな色の変化は、含有されるクロムによるものです。
そのクロムが光を吸収することで変色が生じます。
ロシアでは「皇帝の宝石」と呼ばれ、軍服の色が緑と赤の2色だった
ロシア人にとっては特別な価値があるものとされており、
